Grandsons first deer
My 11yr old grandson got his first deer a doe. He shot it at 274yd (per range finder) that's farther than he should have been shooting ( his dad let him) but it's in the cooler. He got lucky and dropped her with a neck shot . He says it's where he aimed I think not as he has been taught to shoot for the heart and lungs. He used my savage .243 with reloads. 95gr ballistic BT and varget powder I think it was 34gr.

That's awesome, I'm happy for your grandson Steve. I know how you love your grandkids and how proud you must be. Doesn't matter if that's where he was aiming or not, 274 clicks is a heck of a shot for anybody.....much less a 11 year old young man!
Tell him that Mohunter said great job, wack em and stack em Baby!
The .243 does a fine job of deer killing, it was my very first deer rifle and I killed my first one with it when I was 14 yrs. old. I killed many more years after that first one and never had to track one more than 50 yards.
That 95gr. BT is what I load up for my 788 .243 and my nephew Tucker's H&R single shot .243 as well.
I still carry my .243 from time to time for deer and coyotes, I just switch from a heavier bullet to a lighter bullet. The recoil is very user friendly and the trajectory is one of the flattest out there for a medium game sized caliber.

Re: Grandsons first deer
Thanks everyone he was telling his story to anyone he could at thanksgiving.
As for the .243 killing deer it's good to go but it dose have it's limits 274yd is pushing it. We shoot cut bean and corn fields so we just let them get in the field a ways so if they run they are not going to make the timber fast. That said it's in the freezer.
