2x4 shoot Empty 2x4 shoot

Post by Sasquatch-1 Sat Aug 11, 2012 7:08 pm

I did a not so smart thing today. I took my Ruger SBH gate loader to a shoot dominated by semi's. If you are not familiar with a 2x4 shoot, the idea is to cut a 2x4 in half in the quickest time. Therefore most entries are done with mag fed .45's.

I loaded up 24 rounds of .44 mags with homebrew 310 grn soft points (swaged ny yours truely) and backed with 6.5 grains of Unique. I had the preverbial slow moving freight train. I was partnered up with a guy shooting a semi 45. We took 3min 10 secs and did not severe the board Crying or Very sad . I am just surprised that I was able to get off all 24 shots in that time with the gate loader. I actually ran out about 30 seconds before my partner.

Her are a couple of pictures of the remains of the 2x4.

Sounds like fun. What is the distance to the 2x4?

No to the rebar, guess I just didn't hit it well enough. It is new stock and not something that has been around for a while.

10 yards to target. Fire as many rounds as you want. Two catagories, 1 for 22 rimfire and one for everything else. Hence, having to enter a gate loader with the auto's. $5.00 a round with 50% going to the club and the rest being divided between 4 to 6 winners. Most people donate the winnings back to the club.

Maybe if it really catches on they will open a couple more catagories.

I think I will try some half jacket full wadcutters next month. I guess I am one of those who never learns.

That sounds like fun I will bring that up to the local club that does a rimfire shoot. That would be a neat little side match.

The rules would be simple brake the stick as fast as you can, in the case of a tie on the clock winner to be determined by shot total. It could be done either by single shooter or partners. I guess you could have different classes as well, iron sights/limited or optics/open.

A shooter can shoot solo or with a partner. It is $5.00 per shooter per round. We have a shooter who comes out for the 22. So far he is the only one I have seen shooting 22. It takes him an average of 100 rounds to sever the 2x4. Everyone else at the shoot basically splinters it.

Here is a bullet that I plan on using at the next 2x4 shoot. It is dead soft lead. The first bullet is the cast that I use as my core bullet. The second is after I have run it through the Lube-a-sizer. I then run it through my core seating die with the hollow pointing punch (which I forgot to keep one to take a picture of). The third fourth and fifth Are the different size hollow points I can leave when forming the point. This is almost endless depending on how deep I set the point forming punch. The widest is the size I am going to try.

The penny is there because that is all the money I have left after I bought my swaging equipment and for perspective.

Now my next question is does any one have a lead removing buisness for handguns? affraid

$5.00 x 100 = $500.00 That sounds too high.

When he states per round, I believe he was stating per round of severing the 2X4 not per round of ammo.
$1.00 per shot would get costly to sever a 2X4, especially if you're only using a 22 and took 100 rounds to sever the board.

That is not per shot but per attempt. It is $5.00 for as many shots a one 2x4 until severed.

Went to another 2x4 shoot today. Shot with a guy using a 38 spl while I used my 44 mag. Cut the 2x4 in 2 minutes 15 seconds. The 38 was a swing out cylinder and my partner was using speed loaders and of course I was using the Super Blackhawk with a gate loading system. I was able to load 4 times in the above time.

Because of the way the rules are set up it put us in 3rd place. there were about 6 times that were faster then ours, but because they were fired by 2 different teams only the top time for each team was allowed. I think we did as well as we did because we knew our shots had to be well placed.

Thats the fun of it. Showing these dang blasted kids that their mag loaded 45's and 40's and the like ain't the last word in self defense. The bonus is that I recover ALL of my brass.

Dang them 2x4's, They're almost as bad as the zombies in these parts. affraid

Here is the expansion of the latest round I have loaded for the 2x4 shoots. This is a 240 grn 3/4 jacketed deadsoft hollowpoint. It has almost a staight wall and the hollow is big enough to eat soup out of. I load it in front of 7 grns of unique. Of course it is a .44 cal. Sorry I haven't taken a picture of the round intact.

This is shot into a box of dirt that was about 10 inches cubed. Went through the box and hit an old stump.

Very nice! What was the weight after it was fired? Looks like it retained just about all of it from the pic.

Still takes a lot of shots to bring down one of those pesky 2x4's. Small vitals.
