Looking at S&W 38
Need a little input here guys. I'm looking at a Smith & Wesson 38 spl, model 10-6 with 4-in bbl, blue, estimating condition to be in the 85 - 90% range. What would be a decent price for something like this?

I remember when you could get them for around $100.....but nowadays your probably looking at spending at least $350, but you may find one for less.

I think you would be better off buying a .357 mag then you would have 2 guns in one. May cost a little bit more, but more bang for your buck.
A .38 isn't exactly my idea of a good PDW anyway, even if it only has a 4" barrel I would still opt for a magnum load if I was protecting my life or someone I loved, or go with a 40cal.
I saw a real sweet little 40 S&W auto with a 4" barrel that would have made a perfect CCW weapon and it was less than $250 bucks at my FFL's shop. He said it had barely been fired at all.
I told my uncle about it and by the time he got around to checking on it, it was gone. I knew it wouldn't last long.

Agreed Mo. the 357 is a hoss and fits perfect in the pdw role. I let the 40 take care of that. I was thinking that this one would have been a good one to take with me while walking over the property for snakes and armadillos and such. That way if it got scuffed up I would not feel as bad as I would if the 40 got scuffed. I guess since it slipped away before I could get it I can hold out for a HOSS

A nice looking piece. I think that losing that deal was a mixed bag
I can't help but agree with the others about the .357 magnum. I like the IDEA of the .357 because of the versatility. I say idea because I've never actually owned one but I like shooting them.
I'm sure Kcatto would agree with me on this

For what you want to use it for...a 357 would be an excellent choice. For a gonna get scratched and dirty "truck gun"...you could prolly find a good deal on a used Taurus,Rossi or other off brand. You might even come across a good deal on a well used, but dependable and functioning Ruger or S&W.
...and on a end note....a 38sp is better than nothing.

For a scratchy gun, isn't a security six pretty affordable? I heard they're "not pretty"
I guess that's subjective

Some of the security sixes that I've seen haven't looked that bad, IMO. Most of them are a bit more than I need to invest in a knock around sidearm. We've pretty much got our two oldest grand younguns here a good bit of the time so I'm having to double up on groceries and extra electricity when they for get to turn out ALL the lights in the house! Well almost - they didn't have the fridge door open--- LOL. I guess I'll have to double up on picking up cans and scrap iron to have some extra cash for my pet projects - - -

I heard that viper! At least you can see the light at the end of the tunnel I have 4 - 2 that I can't run off and 2 that I hardly get to see. Looks like there should be a happy medium there somewhere. I got a little use out of them today though, my dad is running low on firewood, so I cut up some small stuff just to get him by. Them younguns learned how to haul wood. That's what my grandpaw used to call "earning their keep"
