These are Berry's 124gr HP's and I was using data for a jacketed 125gr bullet. The book called for 4.5grs of Unique with a COL of 1.075". I however loaded 4.4gr's of Unique but had to make the COL 1.029" or the bullet would stick in the lands. Do you guys think my COL is unsafe as it is much shorter then what the data has listed?

if the 125gr jacketed data is for a round nosed bullet, I'd say you will be fine since the hp looses some length due to the flat nose.

The data for the 125gr is for a hollow point. I pulled it from the Lyman manual.

Alliant calls for 5.8gr of unique with a col of 1.12" (max) for a 124gr gdhp. I'd say you are well within the limits at only 4.4gr.

Here are my bullets next to some Speer Gold Dot +P's factory loads. The Gold Dot's Measure 1.12" COL. Now this is also a way different bullet profile too.

it's the sharp angled shoulder on the bullets and increased bullet diameter (.356" as opposed to .355") that causes the contact on the rifling. I have the same problem with 9mm XTP's and my cast trunicated 45acp's.

I seat them just far enough so they don't contact the rifling and have had no ill effects thus far... you may back off your powder charge a tad to convince yourself you are on the safe side and work up from there. As long as you don't have any feeding issues due to the shorter length, you should be good to go.

You could also pull one of those GDHP and compare the bullets lengths. The GDHP might be a bit longer due to the copper jacket weighing less than the extra lead in the berry's plated bullet. compare how much of the bullets base is actually in the case taking up case volume.

i would only add that if the bullet is compressing the powder it might be a concern... i have never used unique so i dont know how dense it is..just my .02....bill

That's the same problem I had with Berry's bullets..........no load data and I was just winging it. They shot like crap out of my 10mm so I sold what I had left over. Now I only shoot XTP's out of it, they shoot great.
