WMD Nickel Boron BCG
I picked up an AR-15 SPR that had a WMD nickel boron BCG in it.
Once I broke the BCG down to give it a good cleaning I noticed it was caked with carbon.
(I believe the BCG was never cleaned on the inside)
The tail of the bolt was caked but I got it clean with some elbow grease, QCG cleaner & some Ballistol while scrubbing it with a cleaning brush.
The inside of the carrier is a different story... I've tried everything I did with the bolt but it just wont come out!
I was told to try carb cleaner but haven't picked any up yet...
My question is: What is safe & what is not safe to use on the nickel boron coating?
Everything I have read about the coating tells me it should just wipe off somewhat like the chrome BCG's but I am having no such luck... Thanks for any advice.

I heard it was brake cleaner you want instead of carb cleaner.

The brake cleaner wont be to harsh on the coating?
This is my first experience with the nickel boron coating so I want to be sure before I start blasting it with different solvents.
Have you used brake cleaner or know someone who has used it on the coating with no mishaps?
Thanks for the response.

Brake cleaner won't hurt plated finishes...paint is a different story.
You'll have to work fast with brake cleaner, as it will dry fast.
Have you tried soaking it in hot water with a little detergent? Usually you can just brush out the carrier bore with the appropriate bristle brush from a gun cleaning kit....but I'm not so sure on that coated carrier. I would guess that it is still chrome lined, but maybe not.

Re: WMD Nickel Boron BCG
The Nickel Boron seems to be coating the inside & out... I see no signs of chrome on the inside.
I'll try soaking it in gas and lighting it on fire after work tomorrow
I'm going to give the carb & brake cleaner a try... I could always use the extra somewhere down the line.
You talking about using a bore brush hawcer? I have every size.
I'm guessing a shotty brush would fit the best... maybe I'll put it in my drill... haha.
Thanks guys.

Re: WMD Nickel Boron BCG
yeah...the brass or copper bristle bore brush...whatever one fits the best. Nylon...would be the best for not hurting the finish, But not many kits come with those.
Once you get that nasty thing cleaned, it won't be so bad to clean it from that point on when you clean it.

Re: WMD Nickel Boron BCG
I did a search for "Nickel Boron BCG" and found this ...
It's much smoother than Hard Chrome, it's easier to clean and you can run it almost lube free for thousands of rounds due to it's self lubricating properties.

If the carb-cleaner don't work ,would a hot ultrasonic hurt it ?

Re: WMD Nickel Boron BCG
Wish I had an ultrasonic...
I stopped by Gander Mountain *cringe to look for a sling swivel and decided to ask a salesman about the Nickel Boron coating and what would be best to use to clean it... the salesman there knew about as much as the rocks around my fire pit...
He tells me to soak it in Hoppe's bore cleaner, so I pick some up.
I figured what the hell, I can use it anyways...
I read the bottle to find out you shouldn't soak nickel-plated firearms in it.
Now I'm wondering if nickel-plated is right along the same lines as the nickel boron coating?
I read through the reviews on the link george457d posted hoping to find something about cleaning but found "all you have to do is wipe it with a paper towel" I guess none of them were stupid enough to let the carbon build up.
I can't believe there is so little info on Nickel Boron BCG's on the interwebs.
Guess I'll pick up some carb and/or brake cleaner tomorrow after work.
The scrubbing continues...

If I were you I'd offer to clean some of your brothers guns first.

Re: WMD Nickel Boron BCG
You may have already seen this but the last post on this site seems to indicate that you can use almost anything to clean it with as long as it is not abrasive. I have not personally had any dealings with NB.

Re: WMD Nickel Boron BCG
I would be more than happy to clean hawcers guns then have to deal with cleaning this BGC (in the state it was in) again...
But I got it done
All it took was a good soaking in some hot ass water with a little detergent and some fine tune picking with a plastic rod from my sons broken kite...
Thank God that's over.
Victory!
Wonder why that didn't pop up in my search eagle60?
Thanks.
