UFO Empty UFO

Post by Pathfinder Tue Jun 28, 2011 10:34 am

Hey guys.
Found this bullet up at the shooting range the other day. It appears to have a aluminum jacket on it. Is anyone familiar with this projectile? It looks to be 40 caliber and has a hollow point with a semi closed base.

I don't know of a commercially produced projectile like that but it is very possible that someone has used aluminum tubing to make their own jackets. That would be my bet.

Wouldn't aluminum be bad to use as a bullet jacket? I thought aluminum was abrasive.

aluminum oxide is very abrasive but you can mitigate that by spraying it with a Teflon spray. as long as you keep oxidization down the abrasiveness will be minimal. what would concern me more would be aluminum has a bad tendency to leave deposits and build up. Not sure what you would use to remove it from your barrel there are many copper and lead solvents but I dont know about Aluminum.

Aluminum also has a higher friction coefficient than copper, so it would drag more, and leave more deposits in the barrel. I would assume that it would destroy a barrel in only a few hundred rounds.

Yes, you could use a spray to keep oxidation down, but there is no way to keep it all away.(unless you live in a vacuum) And you would have to polish it to removed the already present layer of oxidation, and then spray it. I would just stick with good ol'e copper.

they used to make factory bullets from aluminum a while back. I have made aluminum jackets from the aluminum cases for swaging. With the coating, your only shooting them once through the barrel. I have had no problem shooting 100 of them through mine.

I am not telling anyone else to do so, this is just me, but I would have no problem.

I havent heard of any commercially produced either. I dont think this is hand swaged though. It has a very factory look to it. It has a cannelure ring a crimp ring and serrations around the hollow point.

Never seen one like that. I think that I would prefer copper myself...

BTW, I like the name of the topic Suspect

the topic name was real clever....

I cannot imagine making a jacket out of aluminum... when copper or brass tubing is so readily available.... are you positive it is aluminum??

could it be some other alloy??? the mystery deepens... hehehe chicken

(1) The aluminum jacketed Winchester Silvertip™ was introduced in 1980 as an improvement over then existing hollowpoint bullets. The serrated aluminum jacket was understood to enable bullets to expand more reliably and to larger diameters than copper-jacketed bullets. The design intent was to achieve rapid expansion and avoid overpenetration thereby reducing risk to bystanders. The United States Secret Service reportedly used a 9 mm 115 grain version of this bullet until the early 1990's when it commenced use of a P version. This bullet is understood to have performed to design expectations when employed by the FBI in a Miami, Fla. confrontation where the assailant continued a deadly offense after being shot by police authorities. This bullet was considered a standard for hollowpoint handgun ammunition from 1980 through 1988.

Thanks Tommy. I have been looking around all morning. I found the Winchester Silvertips and thought they looked like the right ones but I couldn't find any supporting data. Very Happy
