The first bullet I'm assuming the bullet wasn't straight enough? And the second bullet I have no idea what happened, this is the only one out of the whole batch like this.

Did this happen before or after the crimping stage?

I have had a couple do this....maybe not enough flare or the case walked out a little in the shell holder and caught the edge of the case mouth. maybe even too much flare...

If it happened during the crimping stage...I'd say it is due to varying case lengths. Just a guess...

The case lengths did vary, but all was under max. So with handguns a person needs to trim to uniformed length ?

When roll crimping...it is a must! it doesn't matter the exact length...but they all have to be the same length.

If the crimp is adjusted for a case that is on the shorter end of the spectrum and then a case on the longer end of the spectrum is crimped without changing anything...somethings going to give. Sometimes you get lucky and end up with varying crimp pressures....sometimes you end up with what you pictured above. Neither is a very good thing to have.

Start trimming them all to the same length and safety, accuracy and case life will improve. Smile

Just a guess. I would say the case mouth was cracked and maybe over belled. when you crimped the bullet a chunk fell out that was broken off. Or it was kinked when belling or bullet seating and broke off when crimped. Some times there are just anomalies that we cant explain. I don't care how seasoned you are poop poo happens.
