Re: gun checkering
Dude I really want to try checkering. Iv heard that after you carve the first line the rest is easy. I guess the way the blade is set up there is a runner that glides in the previous track. So the spacing is always the same.

Re: gun checkering
I have a bit of checkering stuff... It's a pain in the ***
but can addicting if you don't loose heart...
That said... don't actually try to checker anything real... get a busted old stock from someone/where and use it, i started on a piece of 2x4... then went from there... round stuff sucks! ... gun stocks for instance lol keep buying up crap stocks for 10bucks here 20 bucks there and checker them to hell and back, you'll get the hang of it eventually, some people master it, some people just never can. and noone can without proper instruction, tips and tricks from online are great but having someone to show you what you're doing wrong (when you can't see it) is invaluable...
keeping the proper line is crucial and takes practice. LOTS of practice
... that being said... I'm not very good at it yet, and have only read a little on it.
buy some stuff and give her a go only one way to know

Re: gun checkering
Checkering is a love hate relationship. Me, I hate it, can do it but I hate it with a passion.
Re: gun checkering
I bet I could do it, but have no desire to even try. I got too many irons in the fire already.
I can tell you one thing for sure Dart, if you get good at it........you can get paid handsomely for your work. But only if your good and have the results to back it up. Then if you evolve right into barrel/receiver engraving you could make some Big Bucks!
That's a true craft just like bow making that takes years to achieve perfection, once you do your talents will be desired by many.
With that said, if you have lots of patience and a steady hand......I'd say definitely go for it! What do you have to lose? A couple of bucks on some engraving tools and some self esteem?
