Re: Dutch Oven Cooking
This past weekend at the Spring Camporee, we made a Chicken Pie and a meatloaf in our Dutch ovens. The recipes for both are not currently in the recipe guide. My son at last year's Fall Camporee won the Dutch oven cook-off, beating his fellow scouts and the leaders, with my Chicken Pie recipe.
If anyone is interested in these recipes, just let me know. I will be using Dove in the Chicken Pie recipe this fall.

Re: Dutch Oven Cooking
Here is the recipe:
Dutch Oven Chicken Pie
Pie:
5lbs of cook chicken, de-boned and cut into small pieces (I use boneless breasts)
2 cans of cream of chicken soup
1 32oz box of chicken broth
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon of onion powder
black pepper to taste
Crust:
4 cups of self-rising flour
1 stick of butter
3+ cups of buttermilk
1/4 teaspoon of salt
Start you charcoals (hint: if you have propane burner you can use it while your coals are getting ready).
Combine all the Pie ingredients together in a 12 inch Dutch oven. Place the cover on the Dutch oven and
place the oven on a good amount of coals, enough to cover the bottom of the Dutch oven, none on the top.
Cook for at least 20-30 minutes for all the flavors to mix.
Get a bowl and put the flour and salt in it. Melt you butter and add it to the bowl.
Add the buttermilk slowly while mixing the flour mixture with a fork until the batter is a little thicker
than pancake batter.
Open the Dutch oven and pour slowly the batter all over the top of the pie mixture. It doesn't have to be
perfect because the batter will spread itself across the pie when cooking.
Place the lid on the Dutch oven and cover the whole top with hot coals. Reduce the coals on the bottom to about 8 - 10.
Rotate the lid a 1/4 turn about every 15 minutes to cook evenly. Cook until the top of the crust is golden
brown, about 30 - 45 minutes.
Clean the oven up and serve. We usually make mashed potatoes with the pie, using the leftovers mashed
potatoes for potato cakes in the morning.
Try using this as a base for your creations.
I hope you enjoy it.

Re: Dutch Oven Cooking
My recipe sounds like a slight variation of that one except I use the canned white chicken, and add a can of mixed vegetables, then use Bisquick all purpose baking mix for the batter. It's a quick and easy chicken pot pie and tastes mighty good when coming in after hunting on a cold dreary day.
It's usually finished after about 6pk.............of soda that is.
Good info Skippy and I found the link just fine. Did anybody draw Rich a map yet?
I'm gonna try some of those recipes during deer season, I'll be the king chef at deer camp.
Thanks again.

Re: Dutch Oven Cooking
Dutch oven cooking for a while seemed to be a dying art as was using and caring for good cast iron cookware.
My grandmother and my wife's grandmother (who is from Mexico originally) both used a lot of cast iron and taught both the wife and I how to use and care for good cast iron cookware.
My grandmother used to make an awsome Frito pie in a dutch oven but I cannot get my wife to even try it.
While camping my wife likes to make chili colorado or chili verde in our dutch oven. We have also made mac & cheese, baked kielbasa with potatos all grotten, and meat loaf.
Since the weather has been nice here and the rain finally slacked off - we cooked in the backyard yesterday and we had chili colorado out of the dutch oven!!!
Used the last of the small chunks of venison I had in the freezer. Great way to use small pieces of meat or tough old meat. We like our chili colorado with lots of garlic and onions, and a bit spicy so my wife toses about a jalapeno and a half in the pot.
We have a big Weber charcoal grill and I bury our dutch oven in it when the coals are good and hot. I use a charcoal flue to start the charcoal and put it on my propane burner to start.
I love summer and cooking outside!!

Re: Dutch Oven Cooking
Peach Cobbler :
Warm your Dutch-oven 'til 1/2 a stick of butter melts ,
be sure the sides get coated.
Pour off the syrup of a large can of peaches into a measuring cup.
Using the bisquick recipe add water to the syrup 'til you can mix enough dough .
Layer dough ,peaches ,dough ,sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar.
Top to bottom cover with coals completely.
30-45 minutes (a little gooey is OK)
enjoy
