Look what I get to build :)
I have this AR15 kit coming for a friend of mine. I can't wait to see the LAR ops-4 upper in person. The lower is a Lar grizzly with a 2 stage match trigger.
He's just going to need a comp for the barrel and scope riser to go with a new scope. He was really wanting a 24" barrel, I think this 18" will be more accurate then he ever will. But if he doesn't like it...I'll trade him my 24" for it.
Going to be fun, even though it isn't mine,LOL

Very nice. I hear LAR makes nice things, never seen any of their stuff personally even though they are made about 30 minutes from my home. might have to check them out as i've been looking for a side charging upper.
is the receiver left handed too?

Lar makes the upper in Left, right and ambi....all eject out the right though. This one is a left charger.
From what I read....the uppers list at $300 for the standard forged side charger and $400 for Billet. And includes chromed carrier .
The lower is standard except the bolt release is modified to clear the left side charging handle.

Re: Look what I get to build :)
He saved a bunch buying this as a kit....or he would have never, ever purchased a PRS stock.
Kit includes:
1 - LAR OPS-4 L.side charging upper and carrier
1- LAR Grizzly Lower
1 - JP modular handguard
1- Magpul PRS stock
1- 2-stage trigger lower parts set
1- White oak 1-7 twist 18" match barrel
1- Magpul magazine
About $1500 worth of parts if you add them up one piece at a time. Way out of my ballpark...And way more more gun than he would ever need....but he kind of a wants to be show off since this will be his first and last AR15 type rifle,LOL.

Re: Look what I get to build :)
I would love some of those parts for my Grendel. They would compliment it very well..
That is a good way to spoil oneself LOL. I try not to set the level so high if you know what I mean LOL. If I don't get any of the better stuff, then I don't know what I am missing and I can still buy the lower end stuff without shedding a tear....

Re: Look what I get to build :)
I finally had time to get this together and tested it out Sunday.
They guy sent it somewhat assembled instead of in pieces like I expected it to be. So I had to disassemble it, before I could assemble it. The barrel wasn't torqued to the correct specs, the gas block was way off center, the buttstock was loose, etc.
My friend decided on The Burris Scope mount riser and the same Mueller Scope I have for the Savage 12fv.
First off, we had nothing but trouble charging the first round into the chamber. he was blaming the mags and the ammo....but I don't think 6 different mags would have the same problem and I tried many different types of ammo. It just seemed sluggish chambering the first round when I let the bolt fly home. It did get better with time and functioned pretty good after a while of shooting. We achieved fairly decent groups with the massive amounts of wind gusts we had that day.
He wanted me to show him how to take it down to clean it...so we headed to the club house for a cleaning session before we headed home. It was at that time I found the the problem causing all the grief. A little shiny spot on the lower receiver buffer tube boss indicated a bolt over-travel problem. Since the buffer and spring was already installed in the tube, I never bothered to remove them.... you guessed it, they are the wrong parts! I found a carbine buffer and spring in it instead of the rifle length.
He is on the search to find the correct parts locally so we can get them swapped out before he shoots it again.
I should have known better than to trust someone else's work....it's always the one thing you don't check that bites you in the butt!

Re: Look what I get to build :)
Some guy on GB had the kit for sale in one auction and the complete rifle in another for $300 more. He claimed the buffer and spring I received is what he received with the stock from his parts supplier....either way, It is correct now and is working 100% flawless.
I could have ordered all the parts separate....but I would have ended up paying alot more....plus a bunch of other shipping costs. So I guess the slight hickup was worth the money saved.

Re: Look what I get to build :)
I thought it might have been GB, since I have seen several similar "kits" for sale there.
Well, maybe in the future I will get another .308 black rifle - I have to make do with my G3 for now.

That's all the 308 I have too....well, It's more of a revamped CETME, but it will beat the hell out of the cases just the same,LOL.
The DPMS 308 seems the most affordable to me.....I might look into one of those within the next year...

Re: Look what I get to build :)
The cheapest way to build a 308 AR....I have seen so far.
Get this parts kit:
308 parts kit <---- click link
And this lower:
Stripped lower<---- click link
That's $529.00 for the Kit and $220 for the lower.....roughly $750 plus shipping.
It might not be match quality....be it can't be all that bad.

My G3 is a parts rifle assembled by Century and it has a CETME trigger group but the rest is H&K with the exception of the barrel which is stamped "made is USA" but no manufacturer.
I have heard fair things about the DPMS .308, and I am not really looking for match quality, but service grade would suit me fine.

Re: Look what I get to build :)
CMMG makes a 308 lower that uses G3 mags....the receiver is a a little over $300.....but the savings in mag prices could make up the difference real quick.

Re: Look what I get to build :)
Sounds like a decent idea, G3 mags are cheap, which is great.
I always hated the prices on the AR10 mags.
I am not looking for high capacity mags in a .308 anyway since I shoot most prone, and do not like the rifle to bipod on the mag.
