not too bad, not too bad at all

The weight variation will get smaller with practice and pretty soon your bullets will rival anything on the market. Keep it and welcome to the dark side.

I am as well. Are you turning it upside down and using the open base to form into a hollow point or piercing the jacket on the nose? I have turned FMJ 9mms around on my lead bullet die set but I dont have the set up to make Hps.

I might have the opportunity to purchase 5000 FMJ's 45.acp.... it would be nice to make half them all hollow points....

Did you use the Ch4d dies in the picture to make FMJ into hollow points????

i found that with forming round nose lead into hollow points you have to lube the bullet first before running them into the CH4d dies or you will lose the lube grove.

Here is a little story behind this. Back when I was reloading, I started out with rifle. When I got my 1911, I had not loaded handgun before. I bought 230 grain FMJ RN for it. When I loaded it, there was a bulge in the case on every round that I loaded. I had read somewhere to take the decapping pin out of the FL die and run the round back up into it to take out the bulge.

Yes it worked, but now the bullets were smaller in diameter and would not stay in the case. So I had put them up for a rainy day or just to have because I hated to throw them away.

When I got my CH4D dies to swage 45's, I had some playing around. I have not loaded these up yet, however, those once 230 FMJ that were too small in diameter are now 230 HP FMJ at the right diameter of .451

Ran them up into the die nose first and it formed the HP into the nose. The base on these are not open base.

Looking back, I prob could have moved the die down some to give it more of an Ogive.

I prob would not recommend this with the stock ch4d punches as those are very soft and bends very easily. I had these punches made from grade 8 bolts.

While swaging into 40 s&w cases, my stock punches bent and just wasn't worth it...
