Rifle Actions

Hey all,
I went to the range the other day with a friend who has a custom built rifle. He has a 98 Mauser action with a .22-250 bull barrel and it was insanely accurate. I got to thinking, if I wanted to build a rifle, how do I know what actions will allow you to shoot which rounds? For example, the mauser fired what, an 8mm round? So how did someone know you could use the same action and bolt to fire .22-250? Is there a list somewhere or do you just have to measure the base of the cases and see if they are the same?

pretty much 22-250,243,308,30-06,8mm and even 45acp, all use the same bolt face,plus a few other less common calibers.

So i could use the action from my Marlin XS7 in .308, buy a barrel to fit it in .22-250, and it would work? Interesting....

well Maybe not I dont remember if the 22-250 is a short or long action but the bolt face is the same yes. You can use a long action for anything almost but not a short action. so for example If you had a rifle in 30-06 270 etc then yes it would work get a barrel and have the chamber cut and head spaced for 22-250 and your in business. I dont have a book in front of me to tell you if a 22-250 is long or short.

22-250 is a short action cartridge...just a bit shorter than a 308.
