Going back to traditional
Well I think I am going to make the switch back to a more traditional hunting rifle. The Remington 700 VS that I have now is just a tad too heavy and long for the hunting I like to do. It has a 26" barrel and the bare gun weights in around 8.5-9 lbs and of course is front heavy. I am still going to stick with .308 as my first choice but my move over to a 7mm-08, .270, or .30-06 as backup calibers. Nobody makes the ideal gun that I want (or atleast can afford) which is stainless metal, monte carlo walnut stock, and iron sights. Tell me what yall think about the guns I am considering below. The 700 BDL is probably out because of its high gloss finish even thought it is a great looking gun. I have also never owned a savage before but my guess is that it is a Chevy/Ford debate when it comes to manufacturers, and I might have to change my username to SavageMan14 if I go that route.
I am considering:
-Remington 700 CDL SF
- 700 BDL (love the style but not the high glosss finish)
- Savage 14 Euro classic
-Savage 14 American Classic Stainless

The 7mm-08 is tempting and may be the caliber I go with if I choose the CDL SF. Some weird reason they dont make that gun in .308.

Re: Going back to traditional
I have a Win 70 Featherweight that I bought last time Winchester was going out of business. I like the look and feel of the rifle, it shoots good, but my biggest complaint is the trigger. Its rough and the poundage is too high. I just had a gunsmith redo it to 3# and I think he said it was at 13# factory!
I personally do not like Remington rifles, its more of a Ford/Chevy thing, but my specific complaints would be their long throat, push round feed and general reviews of poor barrels.
Who I don't see you talking about is Ruger. I love my Ruger rifle. They also tend to be cheaper in price than the other manufacturers, they have a Controlled Round Feed with a Claw Extractor. Something that you might not like is they tend to be Laminate stocks, but I like this because it reduces weight, doesnt hold water, and is a little more ruged for hunting purposes.

I like them all I like the walnut stocks the best of all I have model 70 win in a 7mmmag the only thing i dont like about it is it has a blk synthetic stock I just like wood my favorite. As what model gun and maker you got a tough choice because the pics you have posted they all are nice. CDL i guess would be my choice

Re: Going back to traditional
I would go the Winchester Model 70 Featherweight Stainless that would be my first choice and then I would go the Savage 14 America Classic Stainless second..
Thats only my opinion (and it is a girls one at that)

Re: Going back to traditional
Get a Savage....then at anytime thereafter, you can swap the barrel out to something heavier or a different caliber with the same base size.
The new Savage stainless AXIS is tempting....solid receiver design and the same barrels are used on the high end savages. Pretty cheap price for a stainless rifle. If only someone made aftermarket wood stocks for them....still a great truck gun as is.

Yeah I think the top two contenders are the Savage and the Winchester. I am meeting a guy tonight that wants to buy my Remington and then I am going to go look and compare both guns to see which I like better.

Re: Going back to traditional
I used to have a browning abolt II stainless stalker with the BOSS adjustable muzzle break in 7mm rem mag..... very, very, very, sweet rifle, shot great.... a tack driver out of the box, adjust the BOSS for the grain of bullet shooting and the ft per second and the thing would make a ragged hole....

Re: Going back to traditional
Well I picked up the Savage 14 American Classic Stainless in .308 and I am EXTREMELY please with the stock on the rifle. They had two in stock. Every other stock I have seen on all the other models including the other Savages had no where near the character this stock had. Yes they looked nice but where plain and straight grained. This has wavy grain and a iridescent tiger strip pattern. I am in love.
