Quick question about shotshell load data
I have been working with alot of different loads lately trying to see which works best. The question I have been trying to figure out is this. If the load data says use 1oz or 1 1/8oz or whatever, does it matter what I use in the wad as long as it's weight is the same as the load data calls for and it fills the hull and crimps ok?

This goes against all the So called expert advise. But In my experience I worry about powder charge and shot weight. I look for a wad Coulomb that will give me a good closed crimp with out rolling the hull when you final crimp. I have never blown up a gun or done any damage to any of my guns or any of my friends guns. If you get to really checking the data you will find there will be very little difference in charge weight between different hulls and wads.

I'm new to shotgun reloading, but I have found that I can successfully load with different powders and shot using many different types of hullls using only one type of wad.
I decided on windjammer 12aa wads(white)...they happened to be in the list of the couple of different loads I was going for( light target and heavy field) and have worked great so far.
I've only loaded for 1-1/8oz shot....for 1oz shot loads, you may need to add a card disc or ?? to fill the shot cup or to get a good even crimp if using wads designed for 1-1/8oz. I have had to do this with various different hulls that are different enough to not crimp they way you think they should.

Thanks guys but I think I've given you the wrong idea. I'm not asking about which wad or hull but what actually goes in the wad such as birdshot,buckshot,slugs, rock salt,steal fletchets,rubber balls or whatever. Can I use say 1oz birdshot data but use a slug instead of the shot or use 1oz slug data but use the shot instead of the slug.

When in doubt, revert back to what you know about reloading....
Bullet weight or type will almost always effect charge weight.
...and with shot shells, not having enough shot weight for the powder load used might not work very well. A load using only 1/2oz of material that should have 1-1/8oz of shot will be very weak and puny.
Dump the shot out of a loaded shell and fire it....you'll see what I mean. The wad will have exited the barrel before the powder has even completely burned...the projectile(s) weight and the crimp drastically effects the burn of the powder.
As long as you have very close to the same weight that the load calls for, you will be in the ballpark. Slugs can bea bit different since they can cause more friction down the bore of the barrel...so play it safe and follow the loads for slugs as close as possible.

well there is where you get dangerous IMO. If your data calls for a Slug then only use it for a Slug. If your data calls for Steel Shot only use steel shot ETC. as far as primer wad hull ... I use what I have. Powder type and charge weight do not vary from. Shot charge weight do not vary. If you have a particular load you are looking for and you dont have data I have 3 or 4 books and there is the Alliant web site and the Hodgdon site .... I have slug data Buck shot data and some steel data. you can also go to the BPI website they have a lot of data there too.

I'm not looking to wander into really dangerous territory I'm just looking for a 1350fps+ load with 9 pellets of buckshot which weights almost exactly an ounce useing a regular shot wad and no buffer with a regular crimp. I was thinking of useing the lee 1oz slug data and reduceing the charge by around 10% and go from there. I was thinking the slug would create more pressure then the buckshot would so it should be safe but may not perform very well.
