slow loads for .223
We were in the topic of barrel twist for certain bullet weights. Here is my problem. I got all the stuff to make 22 rim fire .224 bullets ... but because they are too light my 1:9 savage throws them every where. Does any one have a slow load for a 55gr 223?
I think i need to be pushing them around 2500fps to jive with my twist... anyone?

Re: slow loads for .223
I was going to mention trailboss reduced loads....but it only shows velocity of 1074fps using 4.0gr....a little too slow.
I can't think of a good load off hand but If I had my QL working I could find something in the ballpark.
H322 or h4198 looks like it could fit the bill....Minimum fps for a 55gr bullet is just over 2800fps. reduce the load about 1 to 1-1/2 grains might land it right in the range you are needing.

I like IMR 4064 for the 55 grain load there is some play with the charge you can work with .
If you find that change load and that does not work you may change the round its self it may be your rifle does not like the round its self .

22 to 224
Hi,
I've been making 224 out of 22 for some time now, I've had very good success at the range using IMR 4895, powder using
22.5 gr with a CC small rifel primer, I get a half each group at 50 yards using my Ruger m77 MarkII, i have not had any problems with pressure, I fired five or six hundred rounds at the range.
I hope this helps.

It probably wouldn't cycle correctly without modifying the gun. But you never know...

Re: slow loads for .223
Try Winchester 748 or Accurate 2520 The 748 would be my first choice. I have used it in bolt guns 223 for years it will not burn up a barrel.By the way they were 3 different Savages. You can go on the internet and put down SSL and you will 4 or 5 wed sites to look at.
