Late season cow elk
I got back from Colorado yesterday with a ice chest full of elk meat. It was a really hard hunt, I put in every minute of 35 minutes before I dropped her.
I used a 270 win with a 140 gr Barnes bullet over reloader 19.

It only took you 35 minutes to get from Cali to Colorado and drop an Elk....hunting from a helicopter? LOL
J/K.... Good things come to those that wait....at least 35 minutes.

Sure thing, you and I can sit in the woods and Not see anything together.
You would be better off on public ground than hunting here where I do. I just finished up the worst season I've ever had since I was 13yrs. old.

Re: Late season cow elk
That's more like it! Now was that so hard?
That's a good picture and one you should be proud of, I don't understand why we needed to pry it out of ya.
I always imagined elk to be bigger than that, but I guess it's the bulls that get really big huh? Any idea what she wieghed?

Re: Late season cow elk
What did the cost work out to by the pound? About $22 bucks per pound?
I'm still envious as heck, I've never had elk before and I heard that it's awesome and some even say it's better than beef?
I figure that every deer I kill between now and when I die will be costing me over $10 bucks a pound just based on what I've spent on bows, guns, reloading components, tree stands, camo gear, property leases, ect. and so on and so on.
The good thing is that I pretty much got all the stuff I need and since I can hunt on farm tags it should never cost me any more than the price of a reloaded bullet, or a home made arrow then the price of a broadhead which I can also make myself. So in theory a guy could make it as Least expensive as possible or just throw caution to the wind and go full tilt, I tend to fall somewhere in between the 2 extremes I think.
Ask anybody else about me and they would probably say I'm a fanatic and I should be admitted to a mental institution. I've even thought that myself after some of the personal sacrifices that I put my mind and body through just to kill a deer. I've also wondered why I even bother with it? Then when the season opens I do it all over again without giving it a second thought.

Re: Late season cow elk
It's not cheap, but I'm not looking for cheap on my yearly hunting trip. The stories and the memories are worth every dollar. Then once my boy is old enough to hunt the cost will almost double and you couldn't pay me not to go.
