.223 HPBT 55 gr. projectiles

Due to the election, it seems that EVERYONE is out of .223 HPBT 55gr. projectiles. I don't care who makes them as I am just plinking with them. Does anyone know where I can get a couple thousand?

If you are just plinking...try some Hornady 55gr fmj's. I get really good consistent accuracy using H335 with them.

A quick search of Gunbroker and GunsAmerica reveals several vendors offering mil surp pulled SS109 or M855 projectile tips.

You can buy different grades but I have found the difference between the grade 1 and 2 to be so slight as not to bother.

Some are air pulled which some people claim are more accurate, others are collet pulled. Some have marks, but a few rounds in the tumbler smooths them out.

I have shot thousands of the pulled projectiles, and have been amassing a small horde JIC. I have to sort them by a magnet because the local indoor range will not allow SS109 or any steel tipped projectile.

The latter place is currently sold out of the 5.56 projectiles but check often as he gets stocked regularly. He also sells a lot of powder. I have purchased bulk powder from him several times, and is a pleasant fellow to deal with.

While at Cabela's yesterday thought I'd try and buy another 1k 69gr SMK's, but none on the shelf. All 224's were scarce.

I did pick up 1k of 168gr Hornady's in 308, which were the last 2 boxes =)

Sure does make it nice to make you own. I have all I want and when they are gone I'll make some more.

While I envy Reload for his capability I just do not have the room for swaging. I also need a stronger table as I nearly snapped my table in half forming .30 Herrett.

I've been stockpiling pulled 5.56 mil surp projectiles because I was concerned something like this might happen again. I was caught short last time and vowed not to be again.

I've spent the last 3 years slowly stockpiling various 5.56 projectiles, powder, primers and cases. Despite the objections of my loving spouse who complains about the amount of crap in the house and the bills, I have enough to last me a while.

I believe the internet is going to again be the savior of those of us who wish to shoot our rifles and pistols in 5.56. Although I see that on line retailers like AmmoMan, Cheaper than Dirt, and Sarco are quickly running out of all the mil surp 5.56.

Sportsman's Guide had some mid-80s Brit 5.56 (Radway) and also had some stuff from Israel (IMI) and South Africa (did not catch the head stamp).

There was some stuff floating around from South Korea (PK) that failed to meet US Army fps reqs and was being sold cheaper than mil spec 5.56.

Gun shows might be an option as well although last one I attended I did notice a marked increase in not only the number available but the price of both the rifles and ammo.

With the run up again, it will be interesting to see if the various agencies will do all they can to halt the importation of 5.56 ammo from over seas again. I still have a few thousand of the old Wolf ammo but that is getting scarce too.

With prices on the rise I would bet that the over seas manufacturers are salivating to get all the 5.56 ammo imported they can. Be an interesting cat and mouse game to watch.
