Questions on shot
Ok guys, school me here. I am going to be loading for 12 gauge soon. I was wondering around the web and found a great place to get moulds to cast shot with. I am a bit confused. The other day, I was shooting if I remember right, 3" 2 1/2 oz #4 shot for Turkey loads. The Mould that I found today, drops 20 pellets at a time and is labled #4 buck shot.
So this got me to thinking and figured I would come here and embaress myself. #4 buck shot and #4 shot for Turkey, are they the same? Is there a difference in buck shot and shot or is it all the same just people call them different?
This guy makes all sizes. He has 00 buck, 000 buck #0000 buck and so on. He sells them all day long 35 bucks handles and everything and they drop 20 at a time. I figured these would be my best bet.
I just need to figure if shot is shot no matter if called buck shot or just plain shot...
At 35 a mould, dropping 20 at a time, in one setting a person would be able to make his money back and more maybe?
Thanks

Re: Questions on shot
no there is a diff. #4 bird shot is a lot smaller than #4 buck and yes shot is shot. and no shot isnt shot. lol Muddy watter.
Ok most shot is hard chilled or alloyed with antimony.
you can go to the alliant web site or Mec web site and it will show the different shot sizes
hardness really isnt much of an issue, depends on what you are wanting to do with it.
Turkey hunting here in Missouri you cant use anyting larger than #4 bird shot. So number 2 shot would be illegal and 4buck is illegal.

Re: Questions on shot
Hmm ok. Thanks for the info... I will have to study this so that I get the right mould. I do know that I am going to order the 00 buck for sure. But I want to get the #4 shot so that I can load for turkey.... Just got to make sure they are the 2oz I believe will be a good one...

Re: Questions on shot
I was at grafs yesterday when I ordered my smith. a 25lb bag of #4 bird shot eagle brand and lowrance brand was 37.50 honestly just too cheap and easy to buy shot than make it. you can make buck shot though and that is something that is handy. The only thing its legal here for is home defense. When I was a kid folks used to use 4 buck to goose hunt with but now that is illegal because of lead poisoning. If Virginia allows you to you could check the game laws there in your state to see if its legal to use buck shot for deer etc.
To make bird shot how its done is molten lead is poured through a screen and let drop into a water source. I think its usually poured from like ten feet. the different sized screens produce the different sized shot. when it hits the water its like quenching your bullets it makes it a little harder. then you will want to coat it with graphite.

Re: Questions on shot
No one around here sells shot. I have to order the stuff. Shipping isn't quite cheap on stuff like that...
Yea its all legal here in Virgina. We can use buck shot to hunt deer, we can use lead, steel whatever we want. Slugs... Virginia is cool about that..
I may just end up casting for buck shot, get the 00 and maybe another. I don't think he makes a mold small enough for bird shot LOL...
I was thinking there was a difference in the 2.....

Re: Questions on shot
Ok was just looking at midway usa. You can get a #4 25# shot for 39.49
To get the free shipping, you have to order the 50# box for 91.99
Now to buy 2 of the 25# bags, it is only 78.98. So to get the free freight, they want me to buy a 50# box for 13.01 more than just buying 2 25# bags. Now while 13.01 isn't bad for shipping price, it is a bit of a lie on their part. You are not getting free freight as they are adding 13.01.
I swear, I am just about done with Midwayusa. Their minimum order crap, then free freight but lets add 13.01 to the deal.... I am just gonna start going to midsouthshooterssupplies.com www.bigsupplyshop.com and www.fmreloading.com at least they aren't sneaky.
Well midsouth does have that stupid minimum order crap to. So I usually wait to place orders that are substantial. Did that with midway to until other crap started showing...

Oh and those prices are my dealer cost with my C&R FFL. So you can see your price and see what little discount they actually give you..

Re: Questions on shot
Ok just did some checking into this. By getting the 50# from midway, 91.99, it is 13.01 more than 2 of the #25 bags. However, shipping on 2 of the #25 bags is 13.15.
So buying the 50# box, you are saving .14 cents on shipping.
Now I can order one 25# bag of shot, since I have a c&r ffl, under 50.00 for dealers, they add 4.00 to the order for "special" they will do the 13.15 shipping so that brings it to 56.64...
I may pull my C&R from them as the savings isn't huge. For 13.15 shipping, that would not be bad I don't beleive for 25# of lead shot....
I just wish people around here would carry them. They tell me they would have to charge alot to sell for the price of shipping and stuff...

Was that through Richard?
When I bought my lead wire through him, we had emailed each other a couple of times. He agreed to use the medium flat rate and charged me the 13 bucks and some odd change for shipping on the lead wire. I paid 65.00 for the lead wire through him.
