10-22 Project Rifle

I bought this old Ruger 10-22 almost 23 years ago new from Krasner's Guns in Chulajuana CA. The barrel has seen countless thousands of rounds of various cheap .22 LR ammo and indifferent cleaning and maintenance.

I have stripped the original barrel from the receiver and replaced it with a 20" heavy barrel from Tactical Solutions. All parts in the bolt replaced with Volquartsen parts and the firing pin has been pinned per CTP's work.

I have been pleased with how much tighter the rifle shoots. I hogged out the factory stock (2nd, I buggered up the first before I got the router table set right) to accomodate the heavy barrel and intend to chop the nose off the stock and replace with a dark colored piece of cocobolo I have from Woodcraft in Seattle.

I will get the front barrel lug glass bedded soon, as I need to do more sanding in the barrel channel and lop off the nose of the stock with my miter saw.

I have a 20 MOA TacSol scope rail on the rifle now with a Hawke SR6 BDC scope purchased from EA Brown.

As I get more work on the rifle I will update this thread.

Here is a close up of the bolt before I sent it to CTP for chamfering, jewling and pin the firing pin.

The bolt handle is a titanium enlarged one from Volquartsen, and I have the oversized spring and titanium extractor from them as well.

I have the jig and drill bit to drill the rear of the Ruger 10-22 receiver to slip a cleaning rod through, but have not done it to mine yet.

I dislike having an open hole in the rear of the receiver so I am looking at possible plug material that I could use.

I was considering tapping the hole and inserting a threaded plug but wonder if the soft aluminum receiver threads would get buggered up by the cleaning rod sliding over them? Also worried the sharp threads may damage my carbon fiber cleaning rod.

Depending on how thick the receiver is where the hole is to be drilled, You could always counter drill a little bigger diameter part way through and thread that section for a plug and the rod will still be guided by the smaller diameter section without touching the threads.

I've thought of that but the jig and drill bit I have (they are a one piece item) is set for a certain size. I am leaning more towards a rubber or cork plug I can shove in there. Most of the hole is hidden by the stock when the receiver is in the rifle.

I have a buddy that did just that used a rubber plug he got from ace hardware to cover the cleaning hole...

I was thinking of using a rubber plug too.

I am still brainstorming on how I am going to plug this hole once I drill it in the receiver.

I am really pleased how the rifle shoots now even before I have pillar bedded the front recoil lug. I have the parts to pillar bed the front lug but I have not gotten the nerve to drill the stock yet as this is the second stock since I buggered up the original.

As most are aware one problem with bedding the 10-22 is the whole action is held into the stock by one bolt unlike two or more like some other rifles. This makes the bedding task problematic as the whole rifle is held in by one bolt which makes the rifle pivot back & forth in a seesaw motion.

I have considered some of the aftermarket solutions to bedding the 10-22. I am not too excited about some of the other solutions such as two bolts that traverse through the stock and through the action replacing the two pins that hold the trigger group to the receiver.

Another option is somehow attaching a small threaded lug to the base of the rear of the receiver to which I can pillar bed a bolt hole for a rear bolt.

I am planning on glass bedding a section of the barrel channel around the front recoil lug but I do not wish to add a section of pipe around the barrel like some have done.

Here is a pair of the pictures of the original stock that I buggered up trying to use the router.

I ended setting my fence on the table saw to account for the slight angle of the stock sides. I used a round 1" dado blade on my 14" table saw. By pushing the stock C-clamped to the fence I was able to keep the stock straight to the dado blade although it was at a slight angle.

I still need to do some sanding to free float the barrel and I need to glass bed the front recoil lug. In the pictures you can see the area to be glass bedded directly in front of the action cut out.

It’s nice to see other people spending lots of money in a seemingly inexpensive firearm. Makes me feel better about me.

She flipped when the new scope came for the 10-22. The new glass cost about twice what I paid for the rifle new in 1989.

I really like the look of the bolt when it came back as I had the sides jeweled. I will try to get a picture up of the rifle in its current state.

When CTP honed the original bolt, they buffered the edges and ground flat the bolt face. I thought this would make a rifle that used to shoot any crappy .22 LR ammo I stuffed in it into a picky rifle.

However, even with a tightened chamber and a flattened bolt face the rifle still digests whatever dime-store crap .22 LR that I stuff in its clips.

The pinned firing pin is one of the best changes to the rifle as misfires or light strikes are a thing of the past. Even firing Yellow Jacket or Federal bulk, it never failes to fire.

At 50' I can hold the black on a standard NRA slow fire target with all 10 rounds in a ragged cluster shooting RWS power rifle 320 or Winchester 10x ammo.

At 100 yards things are starting to get interesting as I can hit soda cans and liter water bottles all day.

What optic did you settle on? If it’s twice as much as the gun in 1989, that puts the scope around $200, I think. I have a 4x32 power and love it. You can actually see through it. That’s been my 22 go to scope for a few years.

I put a Hawke 3-12x50 SR6 scope on it with the BRC set for 40 gr high velocity LR ammo.

Scope was 289.00 plus S&H.

Sorry have not worked on this project much lately. Many irons in the fire.

In the following picture you can see the titanium over sized charging handle I have. In the upper left corner you can see the head of the nylon recoil buffer that still resides in the action.

Here is the originial birch stock with a few test cuts from my dado blade on the table saw. I should have been more patient and used a scrap piece of wood for test because I really screwed the stock up.

sweet. i just bough my frist 10/22 stainless with synit stock didnt like it so i brough a walnut one and it looks so hot i wont too sleep with it my wife say no will post soon.

hello everyone. new to the forum here. followed Daywalker over here from Cast Boolit's. any ways, as for the 10/22. her are a couple of photo's of my girlfriends 10/22 that i built for her for her birthday a few years ago. the stock is from Richard's Microfit stocks the barrel is from Green Mountain. trigger work was done using information from this site... Welcome to the forum Rick!! WoW, that is one fine looking rifle!! From the looks it appears to be a tac driver.. How does she shoot?? What glass do you have mounted??

thanks for the welcome DayWalker. when that photo was taken it was sporting a Konus scope. it has since been upgraded to a Leupold. and it is a tack driver. RichBirdHunter, yes i am in California. i am in the Santa Clarita Valencia Saugus Newhall area. for the reciever and barrel i used DuraCote. after working on the trigger parts using the information from this site:

What scope rings are those? I know the rail that Ruger gives you can use the small 3/8 mounts or plain weaver rings. However... I tried some weaver brand rings and they would not tighten down enough on the Ruger supplied rail. I can grab them and they wiggle.
