.223 bullets....
I'm thinking about giving my AR a dose of reloads... Wondering if anyone has good supplier that sells decent prices bulk .233 bullets? I was doing the math for Cabelas and it's the same price if not more to buy a die set and then the bullets. 29.95 is not to shabby for 100rd of .223.

Re: .223 bullets....
Midsouth just had a blemished bullet sale that would have been great for stocking up. I bought (100) 55gr SP's for $7.50 so I stocked up and bought 500. I checked today and they are out of all 223 bullets.
However, they do sell something called Varmint Nightmare bullets that I have heard great things about.

MidwayUSA sells some called Dogtown that i've also heard good things about. I dont know if this link will work.

I have another couple surplus sites that I'll try and find as well.

Re: .223 bullets....
These are about the cheapest I have found. $40 per 500.

I plan on getting these to load up a bunch of plinking or SHTF ammo. I am pretty sure they are made by Prvi Partizan.

I could cry if I see what you "only" have to pay.
In Germany everything is more expensive

the 223 bullet prices just got too high for me.. so i started swaging my own..
it cut the costs of reloading back down to where it was worth it.
they are like $17 - $13 a 100 here and $25 a 100 for the better bullets.

Re: .223 bullets....
I have used both the Dogtown and Varmit Nightmare bullets in everything from my AR to a custom T/C Encore .22-243 AI.
They do not like to be pushed over 4,000 fps, but if kept to moderate speeds explode prarie rats like any of the pricier bullets.
Pushed over 4,000 fps the accuracy suffers but contact is highly explosive if you manage to hit. I lucked out and actually hit a prarie rat on top of his hole with one pushed to almost 4,300 fps and he exploded into many pieces.
Kept in the 3,330 - 3,800 fps range these bullets offer stellar accuracy and terminal results. Loaded in .221 Rem, .222 AI Mag, .223, 5.56 NATO, .225 AI Win, etc these bullets are hard to beat. I find they work best with medium to small capacity cases so the .225 AI Win is little too much.
Dont shoot something with these bullets that you either want to eat or save the hide. The bullets shatter leaving flecks of lead throughout the critter and make gory gapin holes in larger critters like foxes and coyotes.
I shot a mangy coyote this summer in the neck at a laser measured 76 yards and that little bullet nearly took his fool head off. Spun him almost half-way round and he did not even utter a peep.
If you get on Daywalker's Youtube channel he has been working with a reworked Lee .224 sizing die to make jackets out of .22 LR fired cases. I have an unused .224 sizing die that has been sitting in my collection. Daywalker's idea intrigues me because this is something I have always been interested in doing but the Corbin stuff is way out of my price range. I am not interested in selling the bullets at the moment, but would like to make some for my own use.
I have some experience swaging fired .22 LR cases before as I had a buddy with the full Corbin set up (~$850 USD). We used to make 55 gr soft point bullets that our ARs ate with no issues. Used to anneal the cases in my wife's stove set on the self clean cycle. Got cussed out a few times because we accidentaly used the wife's best cookie pan.
I have tried to get a Corbin .22 LR swaging group buy together around here in my club but no one really bit on the idea. I figure if we spread the cost accross several people, and we are honest and dilligent about swapping it around as we are supposed to, it would be something worth doing. However, almost any group buy I have been involved with gets ruined by some greedy POS. I still have not learned my lesson from the Rem 700 pillar bedding fixture group buy fiasco.

Re: .223 bullets....
I saw those Corbin dies on Evilbay yesterday I think it was - but thanks for the tip.
I haunt most of the on-line auction sites looking for Corbin .224 dies that I can afford and will not cause too much marital strife.
There are several makers of bushings that will allow you to adapt smaller dies to a larger press. Not sure of one letting you use larger dies, that would be a real trick.
Both of my presses are old, before the idea of the quick change collets which is a hell of an idea. Maybe someday I will get another press with quick change collets but for now, I am OK with what I have.

Re: .223 bullets....
yea, modifying a press to handle smaller dies, no problem.. making a press handle larger dies, very difficult to do.. maybe if you re-thread your press to accept the larger dies, then make a coilet to convert it back to the old 7/8-20.. beyond that, there's no way.
also, the corbin punch's are much different than the standard reloading press punch.. converting that, another difficult thing to do .
would be better off finding a local guy with a lathe to make you a set of 7/8-20 dies to swage 22 cal's.
common daywalker, get to making that point forming die! lol.. i know many people are wating for you to start selling die sets to make 22 cal's!
