SAVAGE EDGE
Has any members heard about or used the Savage Edge line of center fire rifles, Thinking of buying one for Aussie (my wife) and just wanted to know what they were like. She seems to like the look of this rifle with the cammo stock and for the price they are asking here in Australia it seems like a good entry level rifle.
So if there is anybody out there that can help with some Information it would be great.

Re: SAVAGE EDGE
The Edge or Axis(new name) is supposed to have a decent trigger for a entry level rifle. It is also supposed to be just as accurate as most other out of the box Savages....it uses the same barrels. The only real complaints about it seems to be the stock. If you can live with it until someone starts to make a replacement stock..I'd say your getting a pretty good gun for the price.

Re: SAVAGE EDGE
the edge is now known as the axis the guy that made them for savage dosnt work there anymore so he sued them and they had to change the name from edge to axis. but yes matt i have sold alot of them as well as shot a lot and you will not go wrong. check out the stainless steal its a nice looking rifle. also with the very nice recoil pad the large caliber rifles have verry managable recoil so the wife would feel good with anything fromm a 223 to a 308 with little recoil hope this helps in the us you can find the package dealls for about 400 or just the rifle for about 350. Re: SAVAGE EDGE
I love Savage rifles, they seem to actually care about their quality and I have not seen a bad one yet. My Stevens which is made by Savage is on the lower end of the spectrum and the rifle was only about $325 with tax and everything, but it shoots like it's a $800 dollar rifle. One hole and clover leafs all day long, can't complain about that.
You won't go wrong with a Savage rifle Mat, I highly recommend them!

Re: SAVAGE EDGE
Thanks for the help guys. As this will be my one and only center fire I want to make sure I am getting a good rifle. Seems that every one that has one or knows someone that has, has nothing but good words to say about them. As this will be my one and only I want it in a .243 Cammo stock and blued...

Re: SAVAGE EDGE
Hmm .... Aussie I thought you folks down under could not own high power rifles any more?
If you are one of the lucky and smart ones who did not trust the Gov, more power to you.
The .243 is a great caliber and is great for shooting almost anything but the largest game. It is highly efficient and does not kick the stuffing out of you, and does not burn a pound of powder every time you pull the trigger.
While I do not own a .243 at present, I love the 6mm bore size and only have a .240 Weatherby at this time.
The only Savage currently in my collection is an older Model 10 that started out as a .308. It was very accurate as it was but I dislike the Accutrigger thingy always throws me off a bit.
I like the .243 for smaller stature shooters and for small game and varmint shooting its tough to beat.
If I had my wish I would have another upper for my AR10 in .243 AI with a 24" barrel. Maybe some day.
If I got a chance at another Savage for a good price I would not hesitate to buy it. I would think hard about getting a custom barrel in a different caliber for me.

Re: SAVAGE EDGE
Sorry just had another thought.
If this was going to my one and only rifle I would want something larger like a .30-06.
Actually I would want to take the .30-06 Savage rifle to a gunsmith and make it into either a .338-06, or (my pref) a .35 Whelen AI, or since you live down under, a 9.3x72.
While the .243 is a good round, it is not a large game round and while you can down load a .30-06 to shoot lighter animals, it is far harder to use a .243 for larger critters.

Re: SAVAGE EDGE
I know this was directed towards Aussi, however, to help understand so that no one here thinks anyone is breaking the law, Austrailians are allowed to own bolt action rifles. They are not allowed to own semiauto rifles. They can own a handgun as long as they have a special permit and can only shoot them at the range.
I hope I am not talking out of line here, and certainly not trying to speak for anyone, however, from past posts, I believe she is looking at punching paper or shooting small game like rabbits and such. Not sure if she plans on shooting any big game..

Re: SAVAGE EDGE
I do not mind DW, my impression was that the Aussies lost all their rightfully owned weapons taken by a despotic, useless, socialist government. I do not blame them for breaking the law, as I surely would. I appreciate the note.
For small game and shooting paper, a .243 is hard to beat, although I would still lean towards something a little larger. If I could only own one rifle I would want it in at least a large rifle round.
I have shot lots of jackrabbits and paper with a down-loaded .30-06 (still my fav all round caliber). While I have seen moose taken with a .243, I would not recommend it for everyone, in all situations.
I have also seen nilgai and eland taken with a heavy-loaded .30-06, which is again not something I would recommend.

DW is right in what he has said about our gun laws.......... I went the .243 cause i liked the feel and with what i was planing on shooting (Rabbit, Fox, Targets) it for me seemed the right way to go...... Yesterday I got to fire mats dad 30-30 Winchester and have fallen in love with it, so if i chose to ever go a higher powered rifle a 30-30 will be my pick.....
The thing with Australia is that you really have to be selective in what rifles you wish to have as there so expensive here.....
My savage with a scope cost me $600 (and the scope is only a Bushnell Banner what we consider not a high end scope)
Sorry if I have High-jacked this post in anyway....

Re: SAVAGE EDGE
Wow that is some serious mark up!! Crickey!! I believe as you Aussies say.
The Bushnell Banner is not a high end scope by any means but in the package deal it is a good start to get used to the rifle.
You can always upgrade the optics later after you get used to the rifle. The .243 has some good reach and if you want to shoot at targets out to 600 meters or so you are going to need some better glass.
I bust prarie dogs at better than 300 meters easily with my .240 Wby which is just a tad faster than the .243 but is also a 6mm. I have yet to hit a prarie dog at 600 meters but I keep trying. The glass on my .240 Wby though cost a tad more than twice as much as the rifle.
