Barrel swap on Remington 700
I thought it best to start a new thread so we don't Hijack the savage thread any more. What all would really be involved in re-barreling an action I know you would need head space gauges and you would have to shim the correct head space as the barrels wouldn't just line up. but what would be the big deal if you had a barrel vise and an action wrench? as long as you stayed in the same cartridge family in my example 30-06 to 25-06? should just be a matter of head space and making sure its right? Am I right or am I missing something?

Re: Barrel swap on Remington 700
I might be mistaken, But I think the barrels are trimmed to produce the proper headspace. This is why almost all bolt action barrels are only partially chambered.....so the Smith can finish the chamber and trim the barrel shoulder to gain the optimum headspace.
I have seen The Savage barrel nut system used on a Remington 700, if that is something you would want to look into. Otherwise, it's to the gunsmith for a barrel replacement.

they list lots of parts for all guns
funny the barrels for a 700 are half the price for a savage barrel?

Re: Barrel swap on Remington 700
I had thought about taking my Rem 700 in 270 and making it into a .308
From what others had told me on a different forum, it wasn't a simple task. I will have to go back and research and see if I can find the form and see what was said...
