Well I recently decided to try out some new bullets in the old .308 since I just got my new Timney trigger put in. I wanted to try out the Sierra 165 HPBT Gamekings. Has anyone else ever used these? They have a mean looking hollow point tip on them. I loaded them all up using my Lee Collet neck sizing die then checked them out on my Hornady concentricity gauge. Out of 50 rounds 4 mearsured over .003" and were corrected. The majority of the rounds measured .002" or less which isnt too bad for a set of Lee dies. Sorry about all the pics but I felt like playing around today.

I started with 42gr and went up to 44gr in .5gr increments.

I wish you could fire those into some ballistic gel. I would be interested to know what they look like expanded.

Well here are my top three 5-shot groups from this weeks testing. I tried to use the On Target program to measure my groups but it was way off what I was getting on my calipers. My best two groups were messed up by a low left shot. They were shot back to back so I dont know if I was doing something to pull that one shot out or what. I am going to go back and retest 43.5grs - 44grs. I think next time I may shoot at bigger dots, because at 100yrds the 1" dots pretty much get covered up by my crosshairs at 9 power. Maybe a bigger dot will help ensure I am consistently shooting at the same spot.

This measured in the .862" area.

This measured .453" (not counting the low left shot).

This measured .506" (not counting the low left shot).

looks good, however I would suggest against shooting at a bigger dot. my Uncle suggested I go to a 1/4" dot instead of the 2" square I used to shoot at and I dropped at least .5" in my groups consistantly. aim small shoot small.

i would work more on breathing technique and consistant trigger pull. were the shots you pulled your 4th or 5th shots? thats when I typically "fly" one, get too hung up on trying to complete the group. I forget how to remedy this, JPrice had a suggestion once that worked for me, but that was forever ago and I done forgot it. scratch

try this one for size.

Aim off. set up a diamond on its tip and use it as an aiming point. Dial your scope off a minute or so. The impact will not be be where you are aiming and will not obscure your aim point. Benchrest shooters use this technique all the time. Then if you catch yourself looking at the target then your are most assuredly target watching instead of focusing on your crosshairs.

Try this before you monkey with the gun. You might find out it is the shooter and not the gun.

Hey...I like that idea al, I'll have to try that.

Instead of aiming were you've already punched out holes....you always have a fresh target to pinpoint on.

To the novice you might look like a bad shot or your scope is off....as long as you know better, that's all that matters

Good tip JP.
Those groups are pretty dang good RemMan, I don't think I would mess with the load either and I'm like the rest of you, I will typically pull at least one shot when I'm trying for my best group. I have no idea what causes it, but I'm pretty sure that it's shooter error and not the weapon or the load.
Otherwise why would you have 4 holes touching if the load wasn't right? Rolling Eyes
