A common Question
Ya'll probably get this question all the time, but I want to ask as I valid all your opinions...It is about time that I return Mat Bushnell 4200 Elite back to him....So in order for me to do so I have to purchase some new Optics for myself...It is to go on my Savage .243 for me to hunt Fox and Pigs (Pigs when I get the Chance). I wish to spend no more than $400......The range that I seem to shoot Foxes at is any were from 110 yards to 320 yards....
I was looking at a Weaver....(Not to sure tho)

Re: A common Question
whatever it is....be sure to get one that at least has between 12x and 20x max zoom. A 3-9x40 prolly won't cut it out past 200 yards on something as small as a fox.

Re: A common Question
I would choose something that's lowest power setting is in the 4x to 5x range because if you go higher you are going to have a hard time viewing close targets. So something like a 4.5-14 or a 5-20 power would be perfect.
I think some good options would be:
-Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14
-Nikon Monarch 4-16 and 5-20
-Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14
-Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16

I have a Weaver Grand Slam in 4.5-14x that I really like. Now a days I buy Nikon Monarch's though.

Re: A common Question
I'm partial to Leupold, but they can get pricey. Since they acquired Redfield they have been making the Redfield Revolution line. They are 4-12x 40 MM
and are about $210 to $220 U.S. I have one on my 30 Herret Contender rifle. No problems. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Re: A common Question
No doubt about it, get the Nikon either a Prostaff 3x9x40 or 3x9x50 will do the job nicely. In my opinion, no other scope I have ever owned has come close to the quality of a Nikon.......and I've owned a bunch of them.
Don't want to tick anybody off, but you all know how I feel about Bushnell and Redfields are way over priced for a name that completely went to crap a few years ago. Now that Leupold is making them I guess we are just supposed to fork over lots of hard earned cash because they took over the company? I don't think so.
I've heard and read good things about Weaver, but never owned one.
Trijicon is supposed to be some bad azz optics, but I can't afford one and I doubt you could even come close to getting a good one for $400 or less? Maybe a used one, but I don't make a habit of buying used optics if I can help it.
When it comes right down to price, quality, and best value for your buck Nikon gets a thumbs up and that's all I will ever put on my rifles from now on.

Re: A common Question
Glad you decided on a Nikon, but why the Buckmaster? They are more expensive than a Prostaff and it's the same scope with different crosshairs.
I paid $157 for my 3x9x40 Prostaff when I bought my 22-250, and I've seen them on sale at Bass Pro Shops for $99 since then.
I found them at Cabelas on sale right now!
3x9x40 Nikon Prostaff with Matte finish $99 bucks and they are in stock!
This is the same exact scope that I have on my coyote rifle the 22-250
Better hurry, supplies Are limited.

Re: A common Question
Mohunter: i think she will have a hard time with a 3-9x40 at 300 yards...
I'm going to get a Nikon Monarch 5x20 for my 308 (as soon as my license gets approved...) They are truly worth it, the Nikon scopes i mean.
I went to a gun shop where i compared a Nikon and a Leupold right next to each other on a stand to look at the clarity etc etc.. They are the same, plus the Nikon was about 3 times less in price.
