9mm Base guards Empty 9mm Base guards

Post by ar3006 Mon Dec 03, 2012 1:56 pm

Hey anybody use base guards for swaging, if so, have you had a problem with leading in the barrel, I picked up a bunch of base guards from Corbin for my 9 mm Taurus. P 92, when I took it to the range and fired approximately 20 rounds with : it, tore it down. Check the barrel, if I could have gotten a scraper in the barrel. I could've scraped it clean, I've never seen so much my lead in my be barrel fore. affraid

Any help, with my problem would be appreciated.
Thanks

I have not used base guards. I believe you still need to lube your bullets and as with cast fit is king if your bullet is too small it will not seal the bore and cause leading. I suppose the first question is did you lube these bullets?

Hi,
no,
I didn't I believe Corbin said on his website that you did not need to lubricate or perhaps I read it wrong, could you use a spray lubricant. If so, does that work as well. The dies I'm using came from Corbin, nowhere in the instructions does it indicate lubing the bullet.

Thanks for the info. I'll try some lube and see what happens.

Thanks

BASE GUARD? Not familiar with this. Is it like a gas check?

not really the only cover the base of a bullet. its like a washer on the base locked in by the lead. I have seen people knurl them and tumble lube them but I dont see how they help.

I know what you are talking about now. They are the same thing that the guy who sells the swagit style die offers.

Here are some pictures of what the base guards look like and what they look like on the bullet, so reload you think a spray lube will work on these things.

Thanks for the quick response.

do you have the ability to knurl your bullets? if you do knurl and tumble lube with lee Liquid Alox or White Label xlox. IF that option is not available I would go to a farm supply store and buy a jug of powdered graphite and tumble them in that ... Nasty stuff but its what shot is lubed with and seems to work in shotguns pretty well. Obviously shotguns aren't engraving the shot with rifling but I bet it would help. still nasty stuff. And what do you have to loose with spray lube? I would give it a try.

This is what my swaged lead pills look like. I use gas checks but a base guard would be close .... I get little to no leading.

A friend of mine got those same gaurds from Blackmon. I think they were called Gator or something like that. These were also for a 9mm I used to have. I myself had the same problem you describe. It leaded my barrel really bad. I finally stopped using them.

Maybe you could pile up a bunch of them, pour some lead in the middle, and make some thick jacketed bullets?

It sounds like a good idea to me, reload has a good bunch of toys and quite a bit of knowledge about swaging, sure has helped me get started in this fun called swaging.

I think I'll just use those base guards for washers, Corbin's too damn expensive to buy one of those fancy tools.

I just might try stacking some of them up and poor lead down the center as suggested in the previous post, I'll let you know if it blows my gun up the lol!

Stupid question:

What is the point of the base guards if you still have to lube or get leading problems?

I guess I'm not getting the reasoning behind swaging lead bullets if you have to knurl them afterward for lubing purposes....except for maybe consistency.

So, at what point do you not have to lube, gas check, quarter jacket, half jacket?

I would say the only advantage to swaging over casting is no heat or hot lead so its a lot safer. also with one set of swage dies I can make multiple different weights of bullets and by changing nose punches i can change the shape of the bullet.

I would say personally taking Dave Corbin's snake oil spiel out of the mix a base guard and a gas check are basically the same thing. I have never seen a cast bullet that uses a gas check that was not lubed.
So base guard and gas check you can push higher velocities ,,, No one I have ever known or writings I have ever read breaks down what that velocity is.

I have tried 1/4 1/2 3/4 jacketed bullets and cant say that I had leading that was that bad. But I would estimate that I would have had less with lube but still leaded.

Full jacketed you dont get leading but you do get copper fouling. Many people say that you can reduce copper fouling by lubing the bullet and many people do that with Molly and other things.

Hi,
the reason I went base guards on my bullets, was because Corbin website stated, no lube, no leading. So I believe what was stated and bought 1000 base guards that don't work, you can check the Corbin website under base guard bullets.

I decided to go back to the jacketed bullet, I have a good supply of various jackets, here are two examples of some bullets. I made using Corbin 9 mm and CH 40 38 caliber dies.
