Which primer?
I'm preparing to load .44 Mag ammo for my 1894 Marlin. I turned to the 49th edition of Lyman reloading manual (Pg #301) and for rifle loads they recommend CCI 300 & 350 which are large PISTOL primers. All of my other center fire lever rifles require large rifle primers. This is the same recommendation in a Speer manual dated 1970/71.
Do to the fact that rifle primers are considered harder and hotter plus being used in a tube fed lever gun this recommendation just doesn't make a lot of sense to me to use a softer primer. What am I missing here?
What say you?

Re: Which primer?
It's a pistol cartridge, use a pistol primer. A 44 mag isn't going to have a sharp enough or hard enough point on the nose of the bullet to inadvertently set off a round in the tube magazine.
I've only ever used Winchester LP primers in 44mags, I never had any problems.
Welcome to ATG btw

Re: Which primer?
Thanks for your reply. Is there a problem in using rifle primers if for no other reason then to not have to have different types just for this load?

Re: Which primer?
you can use rifle primers they will fit and probably function. But the best and most sound advice is to use the LP primers. It would be a shame to miss that big buck because all you get is a click. or worse
