Scope mount for Winchester 94 Empty Scope mount for Winchester 94

Did a search but didn't see anything on this topic, so I will ask it here.
A friend of mine has a post 64 Winchester 94 (it does not have angled eject) that he wants to mount a scope on. We have done some research and from what we can tell there are basically two ways to approach this, one being the side mount which uses the existing bolt holes with longer screws and the other is to mount a scouting scope setup using the rear sight dovetail. He is a south paw and would rather not use the side mount.
Has anyone had any experience with mounting a scope on a lever gun like this?

That is sort of what he is leaning towards but just not sure of how to attach it to the rifle. The ones that we have looked at in that style uses the rear dovetail and aparrently connects to the barrel band that secures the forearm. I'm guessing that the band would have to be drilled and tapped to secure the mount to it ....
