My half baked idea for .22LR to .223
Ok, just picture it for a second...let it sink in. LOL
The idea is to unfold the 22lr without putting it through a die set. This might add a step, BUT... this might be able to be done pneumatically.
-Drop the 22lr on.
-Colet or chuck grabs the end.
-Air or arm power forces the ram up, unfolding it.
-repeat....
I think doing this then swaging, then resizing will provide a higher degree of uniformity.
JUST AN IDEA... so be kind!!
And NO i have not tired it...yet

I think it would be Plausible. Everything is worth a try if you have the means to do so. Making such an apparatus, what would it cost? Would you be able to adapt this for a regular press?
This is definatly thinking outside the box no doubt. I applaud you for thinking outside the box and coming up with what would appear to be a good design. Might not be for everyone, but then again, not everything in this world has to be right??
I am going to study this and see if I can see the possiblity of this. I am not sure what type of cost it would take to make something like this. Wonder what size air compressor one would need to be able to achieve this....

Thank you! You could say..."thinking outside the x-box"...ROFLAMO
I used Flash CS5...
The air wouldn't unfold, you would use a pneumatic cylinder to push the ram.

Don't forget....
PATENT PENDING!!!!! lol
Ok, as for the cost:
-Collet and collet holder... not too cheap. But fleabay has used ones.
-Old Jacobs drill chuck... free if you got one....
-Ram and body. Can be made of tool steel rod. one piece about 10" should do. then heat treat it, to make it hard. Lathe to turn it down and drill the ram hole...
This could be incorporated into a standard press.
This is my end goal!!! RBT FMJ!!!

Very interesting. Yea I didn't thing the air would unfold the rim, kinda wondering how much pressure to work the ram to unfold the rim??
You have defintaly put some thought into this...

I don't know why it shouldn't work. but seems to me that a die and punch would be easier. IMO

I like your idea man. Very cool. Now you have to start fabricating and watch it come to life. Usually with my fabrications my end result is something very different from the original concept. But I'm a redneck so that may have something to do with it.

If it unfold as i predict it to, it should take less force then forcing it through a .224 die. And NO MORE STUCK 22lr inside the die
This idea was a 2 phase idea, it was to unfold the rim and then continue to push into a die seat to make the RBT ... all in one step.

Now THATS thinking with your dipstick JimmY! Sounds like a plan. Will be interesting to see how it shapes up. Seems like you would need a way to limit the pressure holding the case so as not to tear it in half ?? I agree with Daywalker, that is a slick animation...

I love seeing new ideas and different ways people think. There are so many different ways of doing things, it is kinda nice to see it being changed up.

every thing that has ever been invented has been by some one thinking out side the box and every one telling them it can't be done. Give it a shot worse thing happens it doesn't work. Still you will learn a lot. and who knows you may find something that you weren't looking for.

Where do you get flash cs5? is it something you do online or do you have to purchase it?

Adobe makes it, they bought it from Macromedia YEARS ago. Yes you have to buy it, its not cheap. But you can download the trial version from adobe.com
