Seen dozens of reviews but never once saw them in person or if any improvements in groups. But saying that I would love to see if the hype is indeed true.
Re: 22lr nose forming/bumping dies
the wheels are turning... thinking of making my own punches when dies get here if I ever hear back from those guys... if I don't, I'mma make my own.

What would the price of something like that be? Would it be worth the cost?

It's worth it if you're frustrated with fliers and shoot enough 22 to offset the cost

I really want to know how those work out for you ..... Just the idea of hitting a live 22Lr round with a hammer brings me back to my adolescent days and thinking stupid thoughts... LMAO kind of like the story I posted in the Lounge

Maybe fun to dabble. I just do not see a reason for trying to make those more accurate or expandable.

If you are looking into getting these, and you do get them, please keep us informed. I would not mind checking into something like this for myself as well....
I like the idea of being able to make that little round more accurate. Especially when going squirl hunting and need to make that one shot count...

Re: 22lr nose forming/bumping dies
Hey -06, the Waltz version is an actual die for a press with an OAL adjustment, and I've read plenty of threads where guys sit down with the lee handpress and move ammo from the box to a bucket while sitting in a lay-z-boy or equivalent, the mallat thing had me worried as well but some use a drill press instead and adjust the depth lock to control oal for the Paco AccuRzer. I'm eager to hear back from these guys and will, for sure, post my findings.

Re: 22lr nose forming/bumping dies
so after reading this post i decided to make my own nose forming die. i used some 3/4" cold rolled steel i had laying around and bored out the pilot hole with my .22LR reamer that i have and this is what i came up with for the die body. tomorrow i will start on the punches. hopefully this will work.

Re: 22lr nose forming/bumping dies
ok so here is the first punch. i made it to hollow point the nose. the wooden dowl is used to knock the finished round out of the die as expanding the nose makes the round stick a little. will try lubbing the nose to see if it will help. as i make different style nose punches i will post pic's of the results.HTH oh the punch material is made from the roller rods from broken printers. waste not want not..... almost for got... those are .22 longs that i am experimenting with. also i am using a drill press to do all of this and unless something get's caught between the rim of the round and the step inside the die and can't see a round going off.

Reload3006,
i am not using a hammer...i am using a drill press. it does not take much pressure to form the nose. if i thought it was dangerous i would not even be attempting this. you have to cut the step in the die body so that the round sits flush with the bottom of the form die. HTH

Re: 22lr nose forming/bumping dies
ok... those look great.... you have done a dang good job....
I like the idea of using the drill press or a small arbor press....
There is so much going on on the board and so much i need to build... I almost cannot figure out where to start....

Re: 22lr nose forming/bumping dies
did up some .22LR this afternoon. using the drill press it was easy to re-adjustthe depth of the punch using the drills stop collar. .22 long laid next to .22LR for comparrision. HTH

Re: 22lr nose forming/bumping dies
Incredible response! Wonderful job, What's the dia of the projectile after and before nose forming?
http://www.pacotools.com/home
Paco has tools with different diameters for tuning ammo to firearms. His stuff is also patented... i dunno exactly what that encompasses but it's stated a few times on his page.
How Bout a range report Rick? Congratulations and well done, I think I have a reamer around here somewhere too... have to get me grubby fingers on a lathe again damnit

Re: 22lr nose forming/bumping dies
i made this for my own personal use, i do not plan to make them for sale. the stock nose dia. on the .22LR is 0.195.5 measured just above the driving band. the driving band measures 0.221.5 before bump. after bump the nose measures 0.207 and the drive band is 0.222.5 they fit a little tight in my Kimber conversion barrel for my 1911 and they are really tight in my Ruger single six cylinder. i could bump them up a lot more but then i don't think that they would chamber in either the Kimber barrel or the Ruger cylinder. won't be able to get out to the range until next friday. will give a range report then. HTH

Re: 22lr nose forming/bumping dies
ok i made two more punches. one is flat and the other is concave. both work well as you can see in the photo. all in all this has been a fun project and it did not take me long to complete. test firing will see if this does enhance factory .22 ammo. hope this has helped those of you here that were thinking of making yourself one of these tools.

Re: 22lr nose forming/bumping dies
Absolutely! I plan on making my own punches to fit the dies I have incoming and will document the results with and without rim-checking and weight sorting. I sent money for Paco's Phase4 which has 4 diameters from 222-6 if I remember correctly. I plan on testing the ammo from my 10/22 with a factory bull bbl and a couple of romanian 1969 trainers... and possibly a 22 conversion on a buddy's 1911 as I've read that the auto loaders like the smaller .222 diameter if you're not smashing the nose too much. Waltz also supposidly has a recommended meplat dia. and I will include that in the testing.

Re: 22lr nose forming/bumping dies
Also, the testing will primarily be done with Winchester Wildcat round nose, and aguila's Sniper SubSonic ammo as that's what I have in bulk at the moment, I've got a bunch of other small lots but not enough yet for a study. my romanians and 10/22 had great results with the last batch of wildcat but the terminal effect of the round nose left a lot to be desired on game, thus the sudden interest.
