the really cool part would be to get to hear the reported difference in impact on game... supposedly there's a definite "thwack" with the larger meplat.
I feel like a kid on Christmas eve cant wait to get home off this damn boat and test everything next week.

kcatto,
i am thinking about making another tool to maybe rent out to some here that are interested. say $5.00 for a 7 day week. i would like to get a list going to those that are interested. after each person is done with the tool they would then ship to the next person on the list or back to me. does this sound like a feasable idea? this tool is only for ues with a drill press or arbor press.

Joe,
as i was looking at my RockChucker an idea struck me. i am thinking of using a Lee universal de-capping die to hold the punches. i will have to make a flat shell holder for the die body to sit on. if it works out i might just be convinced to make some up for sale as they will not resemble paco Kelley's or any one else .22 nose bump die. you made me relize that not everyone has a drill press. give me a week Joe to see what i can come up with. i am going to start on a new die body now. yes being able to do this on your re-loading press sounds like a better deal.

well.... i finshed the conversion of the lee de-capping die over to a .22LR nose bump die. it works but what is really needed is a die that is longer so to compensate for that. i had to shorten the .22 nose bump die body and make the punches longer. the washer in the photo is used to set the nose bump die on the top of the ram. after you bump the nose you have to pull the bump die out of the lee die with your fingers but it comes out easy. you can push the finished round out of the bump die using the wooden dowl by hand no need for a hammer. i only made two punches, hollow point and concave. so this project is doable but more time consuming. thes will fit into my kimber 1911 .22 conversion barrel but not into my ruger single six cylinder. Looks like fun, but I took care of my .22 lr accuracy problem a long time ago.........I bought a .17 HMR Cool

Biggest problem I ever found that was an accuracy destroyer for the .22 lr was the inconsistency in powder charge and not the bullet itself. I shot everything from winchester hp's, cci mini mags hp's, federal premium, wildcat hyper velocity or aka Wally World el cheapos, and the only ones that ever performed consistent was the CCI mini mags. But I still wasn't happy till I got the .17 HMR, now I can shoot dime sized and smaller groups all day long at 50 yards. Which is exactly what I was looking for to carry for squirrel hunting. Basically if I can see a squirrel's head through my scope I can kill it with the .17 HMR cause it shoots like a lazer beam, no hold over and no bullet drop. Takes a squirrel's head clean off just above the shoulders too, kinda like a pellet rifle on crack. Cool

Your home made dies look good though Rick.

Rick,

If you decide to do the rental thing, I would like the deal for a week and passing it to the next user is the way to go.

I have a 17 mach II and it to is a little beast, I had a 17 HMR but I sold it and bought the 17 Mach II because the difference in fps was only 200 or 300 and I can get 100rds for 4.95 instead of 11.95 for the 17 HMR.... but mo is right my 17's are amazing little guns.....

22lr nose forming/bumping dies - Page 2 Empty THIS IS FOR USE WITH YOUR RE-LOADING PRESS ONLY.....

Post by Rick459 Mon Jun 06, 2011 9:31 pm

ok so all the parts are done for the die. the lee converted de-cap die, the nose bump die and the shell holder to set the bump die on and the concave punch. to set it up on your re-loading press insert a .22 round into the bump die, run the ram all the way up, insert the lee converted punch die into the re-loading press and screw it down until you can feel it bump up against the nose of the bullet, then screw it down farther to desired bump. to remove the round after the bump use the wooden dowl to push the round out of the bump die.(wooden dowl inculded) i will be doing more testing until sunday. the following monday it will be shipped to DayWalker. so if you are interested in renting the tool, you need to PM Tommy so that he can get a list going. so far it has performed well. Happy D Day...June 6th 1944.

Probably won't ever do this myself, but it's real cool stuff. And at least I'll be conversant if the subject ever comes up. Thanks, keep posting on this, especially range results and game getting.

UPDATE......
as you can see in the photo this die will work for the .22LR, .22Long, and the .22Short. so now instead of shipping it to Tommy next Monday... it will be shipped on Saturday. also Tommy is going to do a instructional video on how to use this die. all my testing was done on a RCBS RockChucker Supreme press. UPDATE
so i have done all the testing that i needed to do. so far it will work on .22LR/.22Long/.22Short. the rounds in the photo show the punch design that i decided on. i left the hole in the hollow point small as to leave enough meat on the nose so that the round will chamber in a semi-auto but still wil expand. the cracks that see you on the bullet are not cracks in the lead nose. that is the bullet lube as .22 bullets are dip lubed. the other punch is a flat nose. so tomorrow the .22 nose bump will be sent to Tommy and he should have by monday.HTH.

so i just did a expansion test using a 5 gallon bucket filled to the top with water using a nose bunped .22 Short shot out of my Ruger single six revolver with a 4 1/2" barrel gun held 12 inches away. i'm afraid to try this with the .22 Longs and the .22LR as they might pass through all the water and put a hole in the bottom of my good bucket. remember this is a .22 Short. measured expanded slug from .22 cal to 0.341.5 make you say OUCH!!!!!

Update On Mr Neal Waltz's Dies... THEY'RE HERE
Arrived this morning and when I got around to it this afternoon I prepped about 750rounds documenting and measuring the batches (dia, meplat, etc) to test em on friday. They've come out looking great, I dont want to spill the beans on the experiment but 750 rounds is A Lot more than it felt like when I was cranking them out. hope to have the information out late friday night.

PacoKelly's Dies have not yet arrived in the mail, but at this rate I may need a whole other day to experiment with Paco's dies... his dies have third punch that the Waltz dies do not, therefore, more testing... chicken

Congrats on the effective tool Rick, I bet those shorts are going to prove to be much more effective than the round nose at dispatchin varmints, for that matter,
It's pretty cool that this thread has been taken to the lathe, and to the bank in the name of the forum. Cheers!

UPDATE>>>>>>> Tommy has recieved the .22 nose bump die and is working on a instructional video for it's use. today i used my .22 nose bump die to hollow point some CB .22's to see if it would work. as you can see in the photo it does. so now i can use the smaller round to dispatch these(less noise) pesky Gophers that are building underground bunkers on my property.
