Testing at the range
Finally! I made it to the range to do some testing.
First up was my 44mag 195gr swaged bullets and the 240gr DW had swaged.
-The 195's were loaded with 12gr of unique ,WLP
- 240gr I loaded at 9gr of Unique, WLP
- second batch of 240gr at 19gr of Lil Gun, WLP
Testing at 25 yards.
The 195's had a nice sharp recoil, but shot low and to the right. I adjusted the sites some, but I didn't want to over adjust, just in case...so it was still low and right
The 240's loaded with 9gr of Unique shot center, but about an inch high....really soft, pleasant recoil.
The 240's loaded with 19gr of Lil gun were dead on center and a joy to shoot. A little more bang, without too much more recoil. My favorite so far
I'll have to play with the 195gr loads....maybe back off to around 10gr and work up again.I loaded these to test expansion ...but time was short. I'll work on a accurate load then go from there.
On to the 40gr Hornet/223 reduced loads I was working on earlier this winter.
test groups are reduced loads using H4895 and Unique pistol powder. Gun used for testing is a 1911 45acp frame with a 223 single shot upper, 12" barrel ,1-14"twist. 4x pistol scope.
All shots fired hit roughly 1" high and 1" to the left at 25 yards. I made no adjustments as I was looking for the best groups.
test ammo was loaded in increments from 19gr up to 20.5gr of H4895 and 5gr up to 7gr of Unique.
The H4895 loads shot ok and the groups tightened up the best at 19.5gr. But alot of unburned powder was to be found in every case.
The Unique loads where a blast....5gr was really mild and quiet...much like a 22lr in a pistol. The best group was with the 7gr.(some holes touching) . No signs of pressure from any of the 223 cases fired.
I will take the 7gr load and work on it later at the 50 yard range next time.
Sorry no pics...I was in a bit of a rush.
I also got to finally try out my new PT1911. Flawless as expected
Edit: ok here are the pics...
All I have is a short vid shooting the 44mag...I'll upload it later.

Re: Testing at the range
ok you all....I'll get some pics tonight as long as you don't make fun of my targets( black marker on plain paper made by my youngest son). I know I have the ones from the 223...not sure on th 44mag....I know I recycled a few for the 100yrd shooting my other son was doing wth the AR.
I didn't have time to go 20 miles out of the way to get new targets, so we had to improvise.
