Lead in Glocks?
Bonjour,
looking at another 45ACP and a Glock has caught my eye.
Can you tell me why you should'nt shoot lead in a Glock?
I wanted a S&W 1911 BUT the Glock is 1/2 the price.
Should I save my pennies and get the S&W?
Any advice.

Re: Lead in Glocks?
Bill has it right. I can not spell the type of riflings that Glocks has that will lead the barrel really fast. Then the lead builds up and there goes your pressure and the outcome isn't all that pretty. Polygonial rifling or something like that.
Most people I have spoken with have bought an after market lonewolf (I believe that is right) barrel so that they can shoot cast. In my opinion, if your going to buy a Glock and then spend another 100 bucks or so on a barrel, that might put you pretty close to your S&W, not sure tho.
I have the Taurus 1911 and love it. I just can't seem to find a bad thing to say about it. It is what you want tho. If you still want the Glock, then look for an after market barrel to allow you to shoot cast, or get into swaging

Merci,
the Glock is about 750€ and the S&W is 1400€.
The PT1911 in s-steel is about 990€.
You dont see many used 45's. I did spot a S&W 4506 in MINT condition for 450€.
€=euros

Re: Lead in Glocks?
Holy man, my Taurus of course here in the states, it is the all blued version, 575.00. Not sure what that is converted to your currency.
I do not know much about smithies. I almost owned one, but mom ended up giving it to my brother he despises firearms and can not stand the thought of owning one, but he took it and put it in the safe. He feels that as long as it is in the safe, then no one can have or use it. Real shame it is...
I was just looking at the Smith and Wesson 4506 on youtube and other pics, man that sure is nice looking. Would not mind taking a look at one in person..

Re: Lead in Glocks?
Yes, Glocks have polygonal rifling, so do the Baby eagles,Jericho,UZI made by IMI ...to the guy that has never seen this rifling before it looks like a worn out barrel. Picture it as hills and valleys instead of lands and grooves
The first time I cleaned my Baby Eagle, I thought I had a defective barrel and all the rifling had smoothed out, lol.

I don't know about the 941F...that's a 41 action express isn't it? My 40 cal has polygonal rifling....look at it , does the bore look really smooth? If so, then it is Polygonal.

Yes, it has a smooth looking barrel. I have the 9mm Jericho.
I cast LEE 124gr TL bullets, I use X-lox to lube. I shoot only light loads.
Should I stop and stick to FMJ bullets?

Re: Lead in Glocks?
The main problem is leading...with this type barrel leading can lead to some nasty results. If you don't have any leading problems, proceed at your own risk. The problem with polygonal rifling is that it is hard to see the lead build up in the bore since it is all smooth...so you could be adding fine layers upon layers of lead without really seeing it.

Re: Lead in Glocks?
Hawcer, I'll take your advice and stick to FMJ's.
I'll try to get another barrel for shooting lead.
Its a pain in the butt to get spare barrels here in France.
Encore merci.

Re: Lead in Glocks?
Lead in the original Glock barrel is not what you should try out, But you life in Europe so you should get the aftermarket barrels from IGB Austria for 250 €. These barrels are well spend money.
Re: Lead in Glocks?

Re: Lead in Glocks?
I own a Gen 3 Glock 21 and yes leading is a real issue. I have tried hard and soft lead mixes and nothing really worked well. The gen 3 g21 has octagonal rifling where as the non-45cal Glocks have hexagonal rifling. I don’t know about the other Glocks and gens but mine is good for about 10 shots, after that there’s no point in aiming. I went with a Lone Wolf barrel and now everything’s cool again. Lone Wolf even resized the barrel to my own hand loads for free! I will say that the Lone Wolf barrel doesn't shoot jackets any better than the factory barrel. I like the factory barrel better for jackets honestly. As for 1911's I would go with a Para GI.

Re: Lead in Glocks?
It's a shame that manufacturers have started to assume that we all shoot strictly jacketed bullets. 98% of us probably do but it's hard for the 2% of us that like cast bullets.
I'm thankful that I am not facing this issue. It's something for me to consider though. I have been eyeing the glocks for a future purchase but I may shy away if I can get a nice FN or M&P that has old style rifling. I like having the ability to load my own cast bullets.

Re: Lead in Glocks?
I don’t know too much about it but that FN45 looks awesome. I guess the military was interested in it for awhile. You might want to consider a DXM, I hear they have really nice "1911 like" triggers.

Re: Lead in Glocks?
Polygonal rifling is a drawback for guys that like to cast their own...but they are very accurate and easy to clean. I love my 40cal Baby eagle the way it is....so I don't cast anything for it.

Could get the this Glock 45. I'd personally go with the full size version if your going to use the weapon as a home defense and range weapon. You can also look into getting a drop in barrel. Lone Wolf makes the most affordable option. I have two of these barrels in my glocks and they do there job and allow you to shoot reloads and copper plated and lead bullets. (haven't shot lead yet through this barrel, but haven't heard any issue with them)
Personally this is me... I'd hold out and look into a 1911 if you want to go that route. Taurus makes a decent priced 1911. Look online and see if you can find a gun dealer that sells discount weapons. I found a 1911 S&W for 520...used but brand new it was 900 or more.

That about sums it up. The rifling works great on hard jacketed bullets but allows for a lot of gas cutting on lead and gas checked bullets. But 1/2 -3/4 jackets work great.
Re: Lead in Glocks?
Merci tout l'monde,
thanks for all the info on Glock vs lead.
I'm gonna buy a S&W M&P45!
