Help picking a revolver Empty Help picking a revolver

Post by Reload3006 Sat Feb 05, 2011 10:15 pm

Ok every one I intend to Lord willing, Buy a new or good used revolver in 44 mag yea i know there are sexier rounds out there now but I have a rossi 92 44mag and I want a revolver. I just got some 44cal dies and i had a super black hawk in the past so im kinda thinking double action what is out there and what do y'all think. I am looking pretty hard at a smith 629 I like longer barrels I dont know if Dan Wesson is still offering a 44 or not. so here it is Dont worry about hurting my feelings I'm pretty tough skinned. But I would rather learn from your mistakes than make them myself. so what ya think? and Thanks in advance.

The S&W 29 or 629 would be my choice. I personally will have one soon or later. My dad has a 29-2 with an 8 3/8" barrel that he used to shoot silhouette with years ago. Its a hand full but fun to shoot.

I agree with a S&W 29 or a Dan Wesson. The 629 is still a great option and more affordable.

Help picking a revolver Empty Re: Help picking a revolver

Post by Daywalker Sun Feb 06, 2011 1:11 am

I personally love the Ruger Blackhawk myself. I had one. Found out tho that the person who traded it in tried to mount a scope with a base a bit too big for the channel and that is the problem. I could have mounted a scope and had a great revolver, but I am not a scope guy with my handguns...

I am looking at getting S&W tho. But I do know that the Rugers will hold up to higher pressures. There are loads out there that are stated to be used in a Ruger only.. I will try to find those...

lol i was looking at my post i should have said 44 swage dies. I have been reloading 44 mag since 1978 that is what came with my rock chucker press. LMAO.
Thanks for the posts and keep them coming maybe you guys will come up with one i haven't thought of. I was chewing on a red hawk they are about a hundred give or take more than a 629 I really am on the fence about it.
I really have wanted a Colt Anaconda for years but colt no longer makes them and they are about 1500 for a six inch which Is a LOT OF MONEY at least to me it is.
The Red hawk is about 800 and the 629 is about 700.
and Day I had a super black hawk that was more custom than origional
i had a trigger job done on it the cylinder armaloyed and the barrel magna ported. It was stolen that is why I have a gun safe now. Sad

a mistake i can relay that i made on that super black hawk. I had the barrel magnaported and then had the front sight dove tailed so it would take Back in the early 80s a red plastic insert. the gasses kept the inserts blackened so it was a waste of money. but Other than that I loved that gun it was by all means my favorite revolver.

My 44 mag revolver is a Ruger Redhawk and I like it.

If you get a model 29 it will a tad cooler for new comers that you take shooting. You can tell them it is the same model as Dirty Harry used. Of course, I start them on 44 Russian and 44 Special and also let them see me shoot the 44 mag before I offer it to them. But after I tell them that it is the same caliber that Dirty Harry used I always have to add that Dirty Harry had a Smith and Wesson and we will be shooting a Ruger.

Go with a S&W 629.

I have one with a 8-3/8" barrel and love it. It is actually alot lighter than you would think.

Rugers tend to smash my middle finger when shooting....I don't have that problem with the Smith.

I don't like Dan wessons.....every used one I have picked up is loose as a goose....I also don't like the barrel "sleeve" idea for something as big as a 44mag.

Plus a S&W rarely loose huge amounts of value like some others.

I’d go with the 629 unless you really want the bragging rights of the 29. However I will mention that a Taurus 44 - blued 8” barrel with a scope looks very menacing.

+1 more on the Smith.
I had a Super blackhawk and I really liked it, but I always shot better with a Smith. The 629 is about as nice as they get, smooth, accurate, dependable, what more could ya want? If I had the money I would have another one myself........maybe someday?

The Anaconda would be a dream come true, but that's just unrealistic and I doubt that it would be any more accurate? Not sure cause I never had one.
Get the Smith.

Looks just like mine with a shorter barrel Smile

Good choice, you are gonna love it.

Order a rebound spring kit from wolff and never look back...about a 10 minute job.

Those 629's are sweet shooters. When I had my Ruger Superblackhawk 44 mag I could shoot it fairly decent, but when I picked up a buddy's Smith in 44 mag. I was absolutely deadly with it, even out to deer killing ranges of 30+ yards. I've wanted one ever since then.
My dad had a Smith in .357 mag. and it was a sweet shooter also, very accurate and I did kill a small doe and a turkey with it.
That's been many moons ago.

While I was there looking they had a great Taurus 6" I almost got it it was 549. But i just really wanted the smith. The only thing i didnt like about the taurus was the painted front site. the Taurus comes magna ported which I think is a definite plus and almost sold me on it over the smith. But with my experience with my black hawk I knew that the gasses would blacken the front site and make the highlights useless in just a few shots. But then again All you are supposed to need is one shot. Twisted Evil
